News: 7 days agoThe Giants placed Jones (knee) on injured reserve Wednesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Spin: Though no date has been set for Jones to have surgery, he'll require a season-ending procedure on his right knee after he suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's loss to the Raiders, in what was his first appearance since a three-game absence due to a neck injury. Across six appearances in 2023, Jones finished a 67.5 percent completion rate to go with a 5.7 YPA and 2:6 TD:INT. Despite Jones having signed a sizable four-year extension during the offseason that contains $35.5 million fully guaranteed for 2024, there are now legitimate questions about whether New York will decide to proceed forth with him as the team's franchise quarterback. In addition facing a projected nine-month recovery timetable that could affect his availability for training camp, Jones is coming off a statistically unimpressive 2023 showing, and the the Giants could now be primed to enter the 2024 NFL Draft with an early first-round pick. In a corresponding transaction to Jones' placement on IR, veteran Matt Barkley has been signed from the practice squad to serve as the backup to new starting quarterback Tommy DeVito in Week 10 against the Cowboys.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension to remain the Giants' starting QB. The 2019 No. 6 pick took a leap forward last season, though his ninth-place finish in fantasy points was primarily fueled by a 120-708-7 rushing line (he ranked no lower than fifth at QB in carries, rush yards and rush TDs). Jones was held to 15 pass TDs in 16 games last season and that marks his most since he tossed 24 as a rookie in 2019. The Giants added Darren Waller and Parris Campbell (among others) during the offseason, which should help Jones' passing numbers, but there are major durability concerns with nearly all of this offense's top players (including Jones, who has missed 11 games due to injury). Jones' rushing and improved pass-catchers are enough to make him a fringe QB1.
